NADAbase: N/MDS & COMS

NADAbase

NADAbase is the combined NADA provided database for National and NSW Minimum Data Sets for Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Services (N/MDS) and Client Outcomes Measurement System (COMS). It provides a comprehensive system of client data collection and reporting free to NADA members.

NADAbase Screeners - NOW LIVE!

On 1st July 2017 we released three new screeners in NADAbase that have the potential to enhance client care. The screeners are attached to each client episode to further inform care planning in relation to the issues of:

Suicide risk - drawn from the Suicide Assessment Kit (SAK) project developed by NDARC, this screener provides specific questions around current suicide risk and advice on assessing risk, AOD worker approach and care planning based on client responses embedded in NADAbase. To download the form, including support resources referred to throughout the screener, follow the links:

Domestic and Family Violence - currently developed with the gendered-nature of domestic and family violence in mind, the screener will be made available to those organisations who work specifically with women and who have engaged in the NADA domestic family violence training. Further work is being undertaken to broaden the screener to male and LGBTIQ clients. To download the form, including support resources referred to throughout the screener, follow the links:

                        Charmed and Dangerous Resource

Blood borne virus and sexual health - is designed to identify whether clients attending AOD specialist services have had access to testing for BBVs and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or access to treatment. Information links to support testing services are included to serve as prompts for workers to consider testing and treatment as part of a client's care plan. NADAbase snapshot: client outcomes data

We would like to share with you the first NADAbase Client Outcomes Data snapshot - it explores client data from those who have completed two or more NADAbase COMS Surveys while in treatment. Our thanks got to Laura and Peter at the University of Wollongong for their data analysis expertise in bringing you this snapshot. We hope that it will be the first of many data snapshots that will provide useful and timely data from across the non government alcohol and drug treatment sector, so let us know the things that you might find useful in your organisation that we might include in the future.

Alcohol and Other Drug National Minimum Data Set (NMDS & MDS)

The Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Services National Minimum Data Set (AODTS NMDS), overseen by the Commonwealth Department of Health is the national collection of a defined set of treatment data elements agreed upon by all states and territories. The NMDS is a subset of the agreed NSW Minimum Data Set for Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services (NSW MDS DATS) which has a number of additional items.

UPDATES to NSW NMDS:  There have been changes made to the NSW MDS data items outlined in detail in the 2015 NSW MDS Data Dictionary. NADA have maintained some of the items in NADAbase that have been removed from the NSW MDS in relation Service Delivery Setting (Outreach Setting) and Main Service Provided (Day Rehabilitation Activities) and mapped them according to NSW Government guidelines for the data extract.

If you have any concerns or queries about these changes contact us ITSupport@nada.org.au

Client Outcomes Measures System (COMS)

The goal the COMS development was to improve the way outcomes of care are measured in non government drug and alcohol organisations in NSW, with a particular focus on co-occurring disorders and mental health outcomes in drug and alcohol services.

In December 2009, after extensive consultation with its advisory committee and after seeking other expert advice, after thorough consideration of the Review of Measures  report and other published reports  and in light of the findings from the Baseline Evaluation  (2009), NADA released its Outcomes data set and the document Determining the Treatment Outcomes Dataset (2009).

For a number of reasons outlined in this paper, including ease of use/client self report, high validity/reliability, common usage including use by GPs and state mental health services (e.g. the K10+), and freedom from registration costs the project decided on the following measures, with questions falling into four domains:

A software developer was engaged to create an addition to the NADA online database to enable members to enter responses to these measures and to create reports on the data collected.

A number of other reports and evaluation products were valuable outcomes of the project and include:

Client Outcome Management System (COMS): Data Report 2013

A Review of Screening, Assessment and Outcome Measures for Drug and Alcohol Settings  (2009)

NGO Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health Information Management Project Baseline Evaluation (2009).

NGO Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health Information Management Project Pilot Evaluation  (2011).
