Policy statement
Network of Alcohol and Other Drugs Agencies (NADA, ‘we’ or ‘us’) is committed to protecting your privacy and confidentiality and ensuring that you are provided with a secure, transparent and positive experience in relation to our handling of your personal information.
NADA handles your personal information according to the requirements of applicable privacy laws, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and the Health Records Information Privacy Act 2002 (NSW).
‘Personal information’ is defined in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), as ‘information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable’ whether it is true or not, and whether or not it is recorded in material form. ‘Personal information’ can also include ‘health information’, about an individual’s health or disability, and about health services provided to that person, or that the person is seeking.
This Privacy Policy (Policy) sets out how NADA collects, uses and discloses your personal information.
Types of personal information we collect
We collect personal information to enable us to provide our services. The type of personal information that we collect about you will depend on our relationship with you. This may include, but is not limited to:
- names and addresses of personnel at NADA member organisations (Member Organisations) which we collect in our communications with you so that we can provide services to you. We may also use this information as necessary for related purposes, such as for providing training grants and registration for NADA events.
We may also for reporting and research purposes. This may include, but is not limited to:
- health information collected by Member Organisations about an client. This may include information such as self-reported assessments of physical, mental health and/or quality of life (at any time) or a health service provided, or to be provided to that client.
You have the right not to disclose your personal information to us, however this may limit our ability to provide you with our services.
How we collect your personal information
Direct collection of information from Member Organisations
We may collect personal information directly from you:
- when you access the NADA website, we may collect your IP address and domain name;
- when you apply for a NADA training grant, we may collect personal information that allows us to process your application;
- when you register for a NADA event, we may collect information that allows us to identify you and issue you a ticket and seek your feedback after the event; and
- when you provide it to us in person, such as at an event.
Collection of Client Information through Member Organisations
We may collect information (including health information) about you from Member Organisations (Client Information). We only collect Client Information that is necessary for our reporting and research functions, which are described further below.
Cookies
We use cookies to:
- allow our server to identify and interact with you more effectively;
- prepare customised web pages for users; and
- monitor usage of our website, including the pages you view.
Cookies do not collect personal information, but they may link back to your IP address and enable you to be identified if you are logged on the NADA website. If you are client, this may also happen when a Member Organisation logged on to the NADAbase website enters a about you. NADAbase websites use session-based authentication, in place of persistent cookies. The session cookie (ASP.NET_SessionId) does not store user credentials or authentication tokens.
Links to third-party websites
The NADA website may contain links to other websites. NADA is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of linked websites. Linked websites are not subject to our privacy policies and procedures. Any personal information you provide on these third-party websites will be handled under the privacy policies of those platform providers. We encourage you to review the relevant privacy policies before using any such third-party websites.
How we use and disclose your personal information
Use and disclosure of information that is not Client Information
NADA will use personal information collected from Member Organisations to provide and communicate with you about our services. We may also use this information to better understand the needs of our Member Organisations, and to improve our services to better meet those needs.
NADA will only use or disclose your information for these purposes, or as otherwise permitted, or required by law.
Use and disclosure of Client Information
NADA stores Client Information provided by Member Organisations in NADAbase.
Member Organisations are responsible for ensuring that in collecting Client Information and uploading it to the NADAbase, they have satisfied all legal and ethical requirements, and have obtained all relevant consents relating to the disclosure of Client Information to NADA, and NADA’s use of Client Information.
NADA may disclose Client Information (including potentially re-identifiable information such as client code, date of birth, gender, suburb and postcode) to third parties including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW); Primary Health Networks (PHNs); the NSW Ministry of Health (MoH), for the purpose of database reporting, which we are required to do in accordance with funding agreements.

Other than the disclosure as outlined above, NADA will not disclose Client Information to other entities without prior written consent, unless otherwise permitted or required by law.
Marketing and promotion
NADA does not generally use or disclose any type of Clint Information for the purpose of direct marketing or promotion of our organisation. If we do wish to undertake direct marketing, we will seek your written consent to use Client Information for that purpose.
Research
NADA partners with several academic and research institutions to commission, partner in or conduct research from time to time. NADA staff (or staff of the institution NADA partners with conducting research) will never use information collected by NADA for research without obtaining your prior consent to use your information for this purpose, as included in the NADAbase Client Agreement, or as otherwise permitted by law.
Record retention and disposal
NADA and Member Organisations may be required by privacy laws or other legislation, to retain personal information for a certain period time. Subject to these requirements, where NADA no longer requires personal information, it will be destroyed or permanently de-identified in accordance with privacy laws.
Access and correction of personal information
Right to access
You have a right to request access to personal information we hold about you. You may also request that we correct personal information we hold about you. We will generally respond to a request to access or correct information within a reasonable period. We will allow access or make the requested changes to your personal information subject to applicable laws. If we are unable to provide access to your personal information (or part of it) or to correct your information, we will provide you with a written notice explaining our decision.

Complaints and feedback
If you wish to make a complaint about NADA’s handling of your personal information, please contact us using the details below and we will take reasonable steps to investigate the complaint and respond to you. If you are not happy with our response, you may submit a complaint directly to the Australian Information Commissioner (www.oaic.gov.au).
